Chapter 5 Summary

In this chapter, Josie goes to the first school regional dance and made every deal with God so that John Barton would ask her for the first dance. "... I saw him standing with Poison Ivy, I wanted to tear my hair out with rage..."
Before she had a chance to even ask John to dance, Jacob Coote and his tall, well-built friend, Anton stood in front of her and Anna. "'Would you like to dance?' the tall guy asked Anna"
Jacob and Josie danced the night away with seven amazing dances.
"Anna grabbed my arm, shaking it hysterically. 'I'm in love' she said through her teeth..." through just one dance, Anna started loving Anton, so after Josie and Jacob's seven dances, it seemed as she was developing a crush.

Chapter 4 Summary

Ivy Lloyd, also known as Poison Ivy, Works with Josie in the debating team. "It's debating time again. The only time Poison Ivy and I are on the same side of life..."
In this chapter, we are introduced to Josie's love, John Barton, who is the same upper-class status as Poison Ivy. "Have I ever told you about John 'love of my life' Barton?"
While Josie and John are talking, he tells her his little secret. "... Sometimes I think life is shit. I mean, don't you find it pathetic?"

Chapter 3 Summary

Josie hates to go to her Nonna's house but its her family ritual to go there every day after school. Every time Josie went there, Nonna had something new to complain about; "Eat, Jozzie, eat. Oh, Jozzie, Jozzie. Look at your hair. Why Jozzie? Why can you not look tidy?"
In this chapter, we are introduced to Josie's father, Micheal Andndretti.
"Michael! My heart began to pound at one hundred miles per hour and I could feel the hairs at the back of my head standing up on end".

Chapter 2 Summary

Josie speaks about AIDS at the 'Have A Say Day'.
Josephine has friends such as Sera, Lee and Anna, who influence her life greatly.
We are introduced to Jacob Coote at the 'Have A Say Day'
"....If your an outcast with your own kind, you'll never be accepted by anyone".
"No matter how much I hate Poison Ivy, I want to be in her world".
This chapter shows more about Josie's relationship with her friends and how she deals with her family life.
For days I just couldn't help thinking about my father. I felt sick at the idea of meeting him, though at the same  time I desperately wanted to.

Chapter 1 Summary

Josephine Alibrandi is seventeen, illegitimate, and in her final year at a wealthy catholic school called Saint Martha's in the eastern suburbs. The following year she plans to study for law.
"My biggest problem though, is being at a school dominated by rich people... Who I can't see having a problem with the world"
The chapter shows how she feels like an outsider because she is an illegitimate.
"My Mother was born here so as far as the Italians were concerned we weren't completely one of them. Yet because my grandparents were born in Italy, we aren't completely Australian"
